As the largest tendon in the body, the Achilles tendon is critical for walking, running, dancing, and sports. This tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel, and it can be prone to injury. An Achilles rupture is a sudden event that sounds like a pop and causes acute, severe pain. People who have a rupture often say that it feels like someone has kicked or cut their lower leg or heel. Ruptures usually happen in people from about age 30 to 50, more commonly in men.
