Scoliosis Care

At The Center for Advanced Orthopaedics Orthopaedic Associates of Central Maryland Division, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for scoliosis.

Whether you are experiencing mild discomfort or advanced symptoms, our team is here to guide you through every step of diagnosis, treatment, and beyond. With a patient-focused approach, we aim to help you live your best life with improved posture, mobility, and confidence.

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways, often resembling an “S” or “C” shape when seen on an X-ray. It can affect people of all ages, but is most commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents during their growth spurts. Early detection is key in managing scoliosis and preventing potential complications.

Scoliosis can range in severity, from minor curves that require monitoring to more pronounced curves that may need active treatment. Depending on the type and extent, scoliosis can affect your posture, physical activity, and overall spine health.

Common Types of Scoliosis

Scoliosis can take many forms and is classified by its cause or characteristics. The most common types of scoliosis include:

  • Idiopathic Scoliosis: The most common type, often seen in adolescents, with no identifiable cause.
  • Congenital Scoliosis: Caused by spine abnormalities present at birth due to improper spinal development.
  • Neuromuscular Scoliosis: Associated with medical conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy that affect muscle control.
  • Degenerative Scoliosis: Typically seen in adults due to aging, where wear and tear in the spine causes curving.

By understanding the type of scoliosis you have, we can create a personalized care plan tailored to your needs.

Scoliosis Signs & Symptoms

Scoliosis symptoms can vary widely depending on the type and severity. Here are some common signs to look for that might indicate scoliosis:

  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • One shoulder blade that is more prominent than the other
  • Visible curves in the spine
  • Uneven length in pant legs (caused by an uneven waistline)
  • Difficulty standing straight or leaning to one side

Some individuals may also experience back pain or tire easily during physical activities, although pain is not always present in scoliosis cases.

If you or your child notice any of these signs, we recommend scheduling an evaluation with our team.

Diagnosis & Evaluation

Accurate diagnosis is a critical first step in scoliosis management. Our physicians use advanced tools and techniques to thoroughly evaluate your condition.

Our diagnostic approach includes:

  • Physical Exams: Assessing your posture, spinal curves, and any asymmetries.
  • X-rays: Providing a clear picture of the spine to measure the degree and location of the curve.
  • Additional Testing: Including MRI or CT scans if needed to evaluate underlying issues or pinpoint the cause.

After a detailed evaluation, we provide a clear explanation of your condition and recommend an effective treatment strategy. Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge and care needed to make informed choices about your health.

FAQs

What causes scoliosis?

Scoliosis can result from various factors, including genetic predisposition, congenital abnormalities, or conditions affecting muscles and nerves. For many patients, the exact cause remains unknown (idiopathic scoliosis).

Can scoliosis correct itself over time?

Mild scoliosis in growing children may stabilize or improve slightly, but scoliosis typically does not resolve on its own. Monitoring and early treatment are often necessary to prevent progression.

What treatments are available for scoliosis?

Non-invasive options such as physical therapy and bracing are commonly recommended for mild to moderate cases. For more severe curvatures, surgical options like spinal fusion may provide lasting correction and relief.

Does scoliosis always cause pain?

Not always. While some people with scoliosis experience discomfort or limited mobility, others may have little to no pain, especially during the early stages.

When should I see a doctor for scoliosis?

If you or your child notices uneven shoulders, a curved spine, or difficulty standing straight, it’s a good idea to consult a specialist. Early detection can often lead to more effective management.
