Regenerative Medicine
Regenerative medicine is the use of your own body’s tissue to help heal injury and disease. In orthopaedics, the field of regenerative medicine is rapidly expanding as it is applied to more injuries, and studies prove its effectiveness. Orthopaedic Associates of Central Maryland is pleased to offer these nonsurgical treatment options to help relieve pain and restore function for a number of conditions and injuries.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and stem cell therapy are the two most common orthopaedic regenerative medicine treatments. They utilize your body’s own blood cells or stem cells to stimulate the natural healing process in certain orthopaedic conditions.
Depending on your age, health, and condition, you may be a candidate for one or a combination of these therapies. These revolutionary noninvasive treatments relieve pain and promote long-lasting healing of many bone, muscle, joint, tendon, and ligament conditions.

PRP Therapy
When you injure a muscle, bone, or soft tissue such as a ligament or tendon, the body responds by delivering platelet cells to the site of the injury. These platelets, which are filled with healing and growth factors, attract stem cells to the injury and stimulate the repair process.
PRP therapy delivers a higher concentration of platelets through a simple injection. It is a short, nonsurgical outpatient procedure that we perform in our office. We will take a small sample of your blood and spin it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the other components of blood. The resulting concentrated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into and around the point of injury.
From start to finish, the procedure takes approximately one to two hours, and there is typically no downtime required. You should experience improvement within a few weeks. While it might only take one injection to achieve pain relief, you may need 2 or 3 injections administered two to three weeks apart within a 6-month time frame.
Conditions treated with PRP therapy include:
- Osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, shoulder, and spine
- Acute and chronic tendon and ligament injuries
- Partial tears
- Plantar fasciitis
- Rotator cuff injuries
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
- Tennis elbow
- Golfer’s elbow
- Tendonitis
- Strains and sprains
If you are looking for an alternative to surgery, you may be a candidate for PRP therapy. To learn more, call

Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy is a revolutionary procedure that uses your body’s own stem cells to regenerate new, healthy tissue at the site of an injury or wound. It promotes faster recovery from injuries by boosting the body’s natural healing power.
Conditions treated with stem cell therapy include:
- Tendon injuries
- Cartilage injuries
- Muscle injuries
- Fascial injuries
- Nerve injuries
- Postoperative recovery
