For patients undergoing surgery for back and spine conditions, pain management and rehabilitation is an integral component of OACM’s multidisciplinary approach to overall care. According to OACM’s Director of Pain Management, Mark Matsunaga, M.D., the goal of OACM’s program is to “address underlying problems as a multidisciplinary team and to offer patients treatment options that decrease pain and improve quality of life and daily function.”

A lot of what we do in medicine—including in the treatment of back or neck pain—involves managing chronic conditions. For example, high blood pressure is rarely cured but rather is managed with diet, exercise, and medication. So too, do people with back or neck problems want their symptoms managed so as to reduce their pain.

OACM orthopaedic surgeon, Sam Sydney, MD, joined more than 50 other medical professionals from around Maryland on a mission to India, providing a total of 61 total knee and hip replacement surgeries over three days through Volunteer Walk. Volunteer Walk is a volunteer medical service organization that provides free surgical treatment for patients in developing countries and in the U.S. who suffer from debilitating bone and joint conditions and who are in desperate physical and financial need.

OACM Sports Medicine Physician Travels the World as Team Physician for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team

For the last several years, Scott Adams, M.D., OACM Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine specialist, has been the team physician for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. Most recently, he traveled to Spain with the U23 team and to Jamaica with the U17 women’s team. As the team physician, he’s responsible for assessing soccer-related injuries, diagnosing them and suggesting the best course of action. Dr. Adams also serves as the primary care physician for the team and staff, diagnosing and treating acute illnesses during their travels.
