What is Revision Surgery for Knee and Hip Joint Replacements?

December 22, 2023

Knee and hip joint replacements typically last 10 to 20 years after initial rehabilitation and acclimation to the new joint. However, additional surgeries may be needed due to certain factors.

Revision surgery is a safe surgical procedure needed when the artificial joint needs replacement or repair. This procedure is usually done due to wear and tear, an infection, or a broken or loose joint. Other reasons to get revision surgery include implant failure such as dislocation or other alignment issues.

Knee and hip revision surgery aims to improve joint function and ensure your joint replacement serves you for a long time.

Evaluation for Revision Surgery

A common sign that you need knee or hip joint replacement is feeling pain or discomfort. You may experience signs of infection around the affected area, such as drainage or redness from the site. You may not be able to use your knee or hip properly.

Knee or hip revision surgery starts with a consultation with your healthcare provider. They will perform a physical examination and imaging tests to see if your artificial joint needs maintenance work.

Imaging tests such as X-rays and electrocardiograms (EKGs) can help your healthcare provider view the joint and diagnose the root of the problem. Other evaluation and laboratory tests such as urine analysis help diagnose internal infections.

Procedure for Revision Surgery

After receiving a proper diagnosis, you and your medical team can start discussing preparations for the procedure.

You can start preparing at home by removing tripping hazards and organizing a convenient sleeping area. Dental appointments before surgery are highly recommended to minimize the risk of bacterial infection.

A hip or knee revision surgery usually lasts about two hours. It may involve two surgeries: one for removal of the old replacement joint and treating the infection and the second for installing the new joint. Your surgeon may replace the entire joint or only replace the infected or damaged areas.
