Types of Treatments Offered by Our Orthopedic Doctors

January 28, 2022

Whether it’s due to a sports injury, an accident you sustained on the job, or a degenerative condition, a musculoskeletal problem has the potential to restrict your ability to carry out your day-to-day activities, and ultimately affect your sense of well-being.

Fortunately, here at Orthopaedic Associates of Central Maryland, we have highly credentialed orthopedic doctors on our team whom you can count on no matter the complexity of your musculoskeletal problem. Our providers have made a name for themselves for the innovative and proven-effective nonsurgical and surgical treatments they offer for the entire range of musculoskeletal issues. Our physicians have been a part of countless success stories of men and women desiring to live free from pain and movement restrictions caused by their musculoskeletal problems, so you can rest assured that you’re in very capable and caring hands.

Let’s explore some of the popular types of treatments our orthopedic doctors here at Orthopaedic Associates of Central Maryland offer our patients.

Nonsurgical Care

Though many of our orthopedic doctors have extensive training and experience in a vast variety of surgical procedures, they typically employ nonoperative interventions to which most musculoskeletal problems respond well. Surgery is usually recommended only as a last-resort intervention, when all conservative treatments have already been fully explored.

Below are just a few of the nonsurgical treatments our orthopedic doctors offer or recommend apart from the standard pharmacological interventions:

o   Pain management techniques- These minimally invasive treatment modalities work by blocking pain signals from reaching the brain. Our orthopedic doctors use these for treating pain in areas of the spine: cervical (neck), thoracic, lumbar, and sacral.

Pain management techniques our orthopedic doctors use include radiofrequency ablation, nerve blocks, epidural injections, facet injections, and trigger point injections.

o   Regenerative medicine- Platelet-rich (PRP) therapy and stem cell therapy are the two most popular regenerative medicine approaches used in the treatment of a vast variety of mild to moderate musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. PRP therapy and stem cell therapy are autologous procedures, meaning they are derived from your own blood or stem cells, respectively. The solution is injected into the injured or diseased part of your body to promote tissue regeneration and healing.

  • Multiwave Locked System (MLS) laser therapy- Cleared by the FDA in 2009, MLS laser is a noninvasive treatment approach that utilizes multiwave, fully robotic laser to promote symptom relief and faster healing. This treatment modality has shown to significantly reduce healing time for acute injuries and enhance the quality of life of patients living with chronic conditions.
  • Physical therapy– This is the mainstay of conservative treatment for various mild to moderate musculoskeletal problems. We have highly trained physical therapists on our team who are committed to helping our patients reach their optimal level of independent functioning.

Physical therapy may be used in conjunction with regenerative medicine and is an essential component of any pain management plan.

When surgery is necessary, our orthopedic doctors may also recommend physical therapy to help you bounce back safely.

Surgical Care

Should surgery be deemed necessary for your condition, we will take all necessary measures to ensure your safety and comfort throughout your procedure, even during your recovery.

Below are some of the surgical procedures our orthopedic doctors routinely perform:

Spine

  • Discectomy
  • Kyphoplasty
  • Lumbar decompression surgery
  • Spinal fusion

Hip and Knee

  • ACL reconstruction
  • Hip and knee arthroplasty (joint replacement– partial and total)
  • Hip labrum repair
  • Meniscus repair
